Expressionist Threads - Painterly Techniques in Applique and Machine Embroidery
Together we will explore freehand machine stitch and applique techniques that
mirror the effects of paint on canvas to create abstract textile designs. We’ll look
from a painter’s perspective, creating colour washes, solids, blending, shading and
textural surface. Other mixed media techniques will also be covered to extend the
palette’ eg use of soluble fabrics, fabric manipulation, simple print, stencil and
collage. Build up shapes to create abstract compositions inspired by the paintings
of artists such as Rothko, Klimt, Kandinsky & Hundertwasser etc. (No materials fee.)
Annie Rawle is a Fremantle artist who has been working in textiles since arriving
from the UK in 1994. She has been stitching and creating non-stop since
childhood, paintings first selling during the 1980s. Inspirations for her semiabstract
work are derived from her passions for colour, pattern and music. Her
aim with her pieces is to produce spontaneous emotional response. She was a
co-founder of and tutor for Catalyst Textile Workshops in Perth from 2002-
2009. Annie also produces stitched jewellery which is available through local
craft markets and outlets such as “Found” at Fremantle Arts Centre.
