Embroidering the Garden/ Landscape/ Flowers with spray painted background
Students work from a drawing or selection from a personal/family/friend’s
photograph(s) (please no postcards or book pictures) of a landscape / garden
scene / vase of fl owers / still life and all or a selected part of the drawing /photo
will be used as the idea to work from. A template is prepared from this base and
used to spray-paint the background before hand embroidery and collage begin.
Silk is a beautiful background fabric but cotton is very attractive also. Free machining
is an optional additional technique. This is an embroidery class with stitching
and collage used creatively.(Materials fee of $12 per person.)
Liz Maidment is an English embroidery artist who has lived in the South of
France for 25 years. Generally known as a hand embroiderer, Liz incorporates
other techniques such as spray painting, machine embroidery and collage. Her
own preferred subject matter is landscape and detailed aspects of the garden.
Her two books ‘Art Embroidery’ (1995) and ‘Les Paysages rebrodés/Embroidered
Landscapes’ (2004) explain her work with these techniques. She teaches
and exhibits widely in France and has had 2 solo shows in the USA as well as
numerous group and solo exhibitions in Europe.
