Samples, Strategies and Stories Workshop

This workshop will explore contemporary and conceptual approaches to working with textiles. It will focus on developing ideas through a process-based approach to practice. We will explore a series of topics, including relationships to place, making-do, and textile traditions, investigating these through discussions and short projects. Participants will be encouraged to generate ideas through strategies including research, discussion, detailed recording, sampling, and short playful projects. The workshop will lead to the development of self-directed projects. This workshop includes a small research project to be carried out in advance. (Workshop suitable for experienced participants.) (No materials fee.)

 

Ruth Hadlow is an Australian artist with a practice that includes writing, textiles and installation work. Ruth has exhibited nationally and internationally, undertaken residencies around Australia and New Zealand , and received several Australia Council grants for research projects. Her work is featured in Art Textiles of the World: Australia , Volume 1 (Telos Art Publishing, 1999), and Reinventing Textiles, Volume 3 (Telos Art Publishing, 2004). Ruth is well-known for her freelance teaching, which focuses on ideas development for contemporary textiles practice. She lives in West Timor, Indonesia, and has recently been working on a writing project, The Library of Translation Exercises.
