August 2011

Thank you to all those enthusiastic people who have enrolled in the workshops. Your student requirements lists will be sent out on receipt of your full payment for the course, followed by a newsletter closer to the time, which will contain all the information you need for the week at Fibres West. IF YOU HAVEN’T ENROLLED YET – IT’S NOT TOO LATE!!! There are still some vacancies in some workshops – ring or email Iris Whitelock, the Convenor, to find out what is available. But don’t delay as we have to finalise numbers and classes soon.

Letter from the Convenor

Welcome to Bunbury for our seventh residential textile event! We have been very busy since 2008, preparing Fibres West for incorporation in 2010, and setting up the organization to continue to provide a well-managed residential event for textile and fibre artists in Western Australia . Those of you who have attended previous Fibres West events will know that we began as a Regional Forum in 1992, under the auspices of The Australian Forum for Textile Arts Ltd (TAFTA). Since then, dedicated committee members have pulled out all the stops to give you an experience that you thoroughly enjoy and continue to support.

Our primary focus has been to provide a high level of textile tuition to Western Australians, who otherwise have to travel at considerable expense (in both time and money) to attend an Eastern states textile Forum. Over the years, we have invited many renowned Australian and International tutors to teach at Fibres West. As the events have grown in strength and reputation, they have become increasingly well attended by people outside Western Australia as well.

Fibres West 2011 is no exception, and I am delighted to introduce a wonderful group of ten tutors, whose workshops are sure to stimulate you and promote your art practice. We encourage you to challenge yourselves in new or unexplored areas, and extend your existing practice. We have selected tutors who will encourage and inspire you within a wide range of contemporary textile and fibre arts. You will have the opportunity to spend 5 days immersed in workshops, experimentation and play, talks, textiles and fibres, with like-minded people and world-class tutors.

On behalf of the organizing committee for Fibres West 2011, I wish you all the best for a happy, challenging, fulfilling, and inspiring week!

Iris Whitelock, Convenor
