Print - Stitch - Paper - Fabric
Tutor: Linda Stokes (WA)
This workshop is all about combining print and stitch, using a variety of surfaces and structural dimensions.
Explore the fundamentals and beyond of gel plate printing, using a range of papers and fabrics as your canvas. This followed by other, elementary print techniques, along with further enhancements using machine or hand stitch.
Techniques covered include gel printing with various media and methods, collage, making fabric paper, several bookmaking forms (including scrolls), free motion machine stitch on fabric and paper, making and using our own print blocks, stamps and stencils. Rather than merely accumulating a huge stack of collage papers, the prints can be used in your chosen projects, and you will have ample methods and ideas for future work.
Students can decide to work small, for example a bookmaking series or project, or large on a wall or sculptural piece of their choice. The workshop is suitable for beginner to intermediate levels of experience.

Bio
Linda Stokes makes textile and mixed media art that is rich with layers of colour, texture and pattern. She writes: "My inspiration often comes from nature, especially from my Perth hills environment. Art can express feelings and concerns more effectively than words, so it’s very satisfying when it makes a connection with people. I usually work intuitively, with no fixed plan. Creative play, responding to my materials and building up layers by printing, dyeing, painting or stitching, gives a sense of depth, narrative, and history to the work. The layers may then be excavated to reveal what lies beneath. The idea of making something precious from offcuts or found materials helps me to work freely, playing with ideas and process without fear. Photography or drawing closeup details from nature provides inspiration for surface design. My most recent work has been turning more towards mixed media, collage, artist books and painting."
