FIBRES WEST 2011 PUBLIC PROGRAM
Members of the public are warmly invited to attend one or more of the following public events
held as part of the Fibres West 2011 program.
Sunday 9 October, 1pm to 6pm: Fibres West Trade Hall; Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School,
free admission.
Sunday 9 October, 7:30pm: TUTOR LECTURE: Lissa Hunter (USA) will be giving a slide lecture
about her varied artistic career spanning 30 years, in which she has employed a range of fibre
techniques as well as drawing and painting. She will talk about how ideas, materials and techniques
have kept her work exciting and fresh for her. Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Auditorium,
admission $5, pay at the door.
Tuesday 11 October, 7:30pm: TUTOR LECTURE: Ruth Hadlow (West Timor) will present an audio visual lecture about her freelance teaching which focuses on ideas development for
contemporary textiles practice, including her experience of working and living in West Timor.

Wednesday 12 October at 3pm and again at 4pm: Wendy Lugg will present Floor Talks at the
Unique Perspectives : Two Solo Exhibitions – Felted works by Helen O’Hare, and Joomchi
Paper works by Jiyoung Chung. Bunbury Regional Art Galleries, the distinctive pink former
convent in the city centre at 64 Wittenoom Street, Bunbury; free admission.
Wednesday 12 October 7:30pm: TUTOR LECTURE: Akira Blount (USA) will present a slide
lecture about her career as an artist and educator, designing and making dolls and figures which
feature in many international collections and publications. Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School
Auditorium; admission $5, pay at the door.
Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School is located 10km south of Bunbury at Gelorup. From the centre
of Bunbury travel south down the Bussell Highway; turn left into Frances St, right into Allen Road and
right into the school. Park in the Northern Entrance Car Park, and follow the Fibres West signs to the
Auditorium.
The Trade Hall will be open to the public at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School in the Year 7
Centre (S block). Follow the signs from the visitors’ car park. Representatives from Halcyon Steppe,
Silk Wholesalers, and Cottage Country Woolwear will have a selection of goods for sale, including
fabrics, threads, papers, fibre, yarns, embellishments and a range of textile books.
Floor Talks at the Unique Perspectives exhibition. Held to coincide with Fibres West, Unique
Perspectives showcases two solo exhibitions by international textile and fibre artists, Helen O’Hare
(UK/Ireland) and Jiyoung Chung (Korea/USA). Technically intricate, their work manifests the
transformation from traditional textile and paper craft into vibrant and fascinating contemporary art.
This work is not going to be shown anywhere else in Australia, and it is Bunbury Regional Art
Galleries’ only international exhibition for 2011. It’s a rare treat for all textile enthusiasts – don’t miss
it! Floor talks will give further background to the work of these fascinating women. Admission is free,
and afternoon tea and biscuits will be provided.
FIBRES WEST 2011 offers a fully residential program over five days, providing participants with opportunities for learning and the exchange of ideas with other textile craftspeople. Included is tuition in one of ten workshops, slide presentations, evening activities, a trade hall, bazaar and exhibitions.
WORKSHOPS run for five days, Monday to Friday, with a free half day on Wednesday afternoon when optional activities will be offered. Generally, workshops are limited to 12 participants. Most workshops have a materials fee, payable to the tutor on the first day. Students will be advised of workshop requirements on enrolment. Workshops are filled on a first-come first-served basis. If your preferred workshop is full or cancelled, you will be offered a place in your second preference workshop, another workshop or a full refund. The organisers reserve the right to withdraw a workshop if the minimum enrolment of eight is not reached by July 29 2011.
BUNBURY CATHEDRAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL is set in bushland at Gelorup on the southern outskirts of Bunbury in the south west of Western Australia . This modern co-educational boarding school is an ideal venue for Fibres West, with new spacious dining hall and classroom facilities, and upgraded accommodation which includes disabled facilities.
TRAVEL TO BUNBURY from Perth is by car or daily coach or rail services. The travelling distance by car is about 190km, approximately two hours' drive. Coach services depart from the East Perth Bus terminal and rail services depart from Perth City railway station. |
