Artist

Linda Stokes (Western Australia)

I make textile and mixed media art that is rich with layers of colour, texture and pattern.  My inspiration often comes from nature, especially from my Perth hills environment. Art can express feelings and concerns more effectively than words, so it’s very satisfying when it makes a connection with people.

I usually work intuitively, with no fixed plan. Creative play, responding to my materials and building up layers by printing, dyeing, painting or stitching, gives a sense of depth, narrative,  and history to the work. The layers may then be excavated to reveal what lies beneath.

The idea of making something precious from offcuts or found materials helps me to work freely, playing with ideas and process without fear. Photography or drawing closeup details from nature provides inspiration for surface design.

My most recent work has been turning more towards mixed media, collage, artist books and painting.
