Stitching from Life
TUTOR
Susie Vickery (Western Australia)
Come and stitch the world around you, sketching with threads from life.
If, like me, you are far more comfortable using a needle than a pencil, this engaging workshop offers you the chance to learn to wield that needle in a sketchy way.
We will begin with stitching exercises, sketching still lifes with thread, using blocks of appliquéd cloth to create base shapes. We then turn to life drawing with thread, using the same free form stitching technique. A session with a life model provides the wonderful opportunity to really capture a person’s form in thread.
The focus then shifts to creating a more detailed still life or portrait (your choice!), adding colour, depth and interest by appliquéing base shapes in fabric, then stitching into them. The choice of fabrics adds depth and emotion, and the slowness of stitch allows time to really look at your subject and get to know it.
