Artist
Fiona Gavino (Western Australia)
Fiona Gavino can be described as an intercultural artist working the traditional into the contemporary. Gavino uses basket-making materials and techniques in new and innovative ways to create sculpture, installation, video and printmaking. With basketry as the foundation of her practice, there is an undeniable crafted aesthetic to her work. As an artist, she pushes the boundaries of what basketry can physically do and say as she continues to seek to engage with the broad spectrum of social, political, and environmental challenges of contemporary society.

Fibre Sculpture & the Expression of Place
Basketry is an art form that can be deeply connected to land. The materials used to make baskets are often gathered from nature, and the designs and techniques used in their construction are informed by the natural world. In this way, basketry can be seen as a way of expressing the relationship between all humans and the land.
