Fibre Sculpture & the Expression of Place
TUTOR
Fiona Gavino (Western Australia)
This workshop offers you the opportunity to explore basket weaving as a medium for sculpture and installation to celebrate ideas of place and environment. Using primarily natural fibres with some manufactured material such as wire you will be taught to develop sculptural forms from various techniques such as neolithic braid, random weaving, twining, and coiling. Over the week you will enrich your visual vernacular and also explore process-driven approaches outside the classroom.
Prior basketry experience is not essential for participation in this workshop as fundamental techniques will be taught. For those with previous experience, this workshop will aim to broaden your approach to weaving by introducing a more conceptual perspective to the creation of woven forms.
