Sculptural Wallhangings - Multi-layer techniques for seamless felt objects

TUTOR

Dagmar Binder (Germany)

In this in-depth felting workshop the focus is on creating sculptural wall installations, the art of well-planned layouts and a range of felting techniques which determine the way your felt will (or can) go.

We’ll consider the characteristics of various wool types, batts, prefelt, tops and their interaction; experiment with various fibre directions and the way in which the initial setting influences final consistency and shape.

Adding intricate 3D elements to a surface, we consider the need for durable connections and a functional placement of resists, to define how the felted structure will unfold later.

Participants are asked to bring sources of inspiration, ideas, photo(s) or sketches and together we will discuss concepts, technical details, options and solutions for ‘tricky’ situations.

Alongside the tutor’s expertise and support, participants can learn from each other, understand parallels and differences of several ways of working, and develop confidence in their personal dialogue between the felt and the maker.
