Delve into the world of handmade books! In this workshop the focus is on learning a wide variety of book structures and exploring the versatility of handmade books as containers or objects of art.
Using a range of materials and drawing on the sculptural qualities of paper and pages, book structures will include compound folded, sculptural concertinas, a Coptic bound journal (feral or plain), a compound, hinged page binding (butterfly book), a book sewn on tapes. These structures are versatile, and all lend themselves to a wide variety of sizes and interpretations for use as journals, artists' sketch books, ‘feral’ journals, or stand-alone sculptural works.
Covers can be soft or hard and include fabric, (handmade) papers, wood, perspex to name a few.
Following detailed demonstrations and creating examples, students will be encouraged to develop a theme of choice and create their own individual works.
Material Fee: approx. $10
