TRADE HALL
Specialist textile traders at Fibres West 2023 will provide the opportunity to purchase or order their sumptuous textile supplies! Traders will be open on arrival day, Sunday July 2 (the day before classes commence) from 1 pm - 6 pm, and on Monday to Thursday (trading times TBC). See our Sponsors and Advertisers; many of our sponsors and advertisers will be in attendance at Fibres West 2023.
TUESDAY NIGHT ART BAZAAR
Tutors and students will have the opportunity to sell their own work at the Art Bazaar. Only handmade products to be sold, or publications of your own work, ie. books, DVDs. This is a great opportunity to market your work to others who appreciate handcrafted fibre/textile pieces and would like to add to their collections or purchase gifts for others (think Christmas in July!). You can book a table via this link. There is NO booking fee, however, Bazaar participants are asked to donate an item of their work (or book/DVD of their work, or handmade materials) to the Art Raffle which will be drawn on the Thursday of Fibres West.
EXHIBITIONS
Planning is well underway to again host some excellent displays and exhibitions showcasing the work (and collections) of several textile associations in Western Australia. Stay tuned for more details as they come to hand!
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Fibres West 2023 will again host an Artist in Residence for the entire week and we are delighted to welcome Jill O’Meehan in this role. Jill’s fibre sculptures and installation are sublimely original, colourful, and set to spark joy.
Jill is a multidisciplinary artist based in Borden in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. She completed a BA Fine Arts Degree from Curtin University in 2015 and works prolifically across the disciplines of Installation Art, Textiles, Sculpture, Printmaking and Abstract Painting. Jill is an avid collector of eclectic objects ranging from what she terms “nature’s cast-offs to human-made debris”.
She also recycles and reuses household plastics, glass and metals; the process of collecting items on mass over long periods is both compelling and therapeutic. Colours, light, shapes and textures are the impressions she most wants to capture. Careful consideration of the beauty of each found object is key to the development of her “Collections” artworks which are installed within a specific space.
More recently, Jill has been exploring textile art, particularly craft processes such as crochet and felting. She has been applying and incorporating these skills in her contemporary art practice, numerous artist-in-residencies, exhibitions and multiple installation works. Just as importantly, Jill is driven by the appreciation and enjoyment and the experiences felt by viewers as they are drawn into her work.
