Blue on Blue: Indigo & Shibori on Fabric and Paper
Tutor: Cathy Moon (QLD)
Discover the wonderful design possibilities of Indigo and Shibori on fabric and paper. Going beyond the basics, learn lesser known techniques such as Guntai and Katano Shibori (stitching), the finer points of Arashi and Bomaki (pole wrapping) Itajime (clamping), wrapping and binding, and numerous stitching techniques including Mokume, Ori-Nui, Japanese larch and Maki-age.
Fabrics and papers will be dipped into an Indigo vat to produce the wonderful blue and white designs that give Shibori cloth and paper its distinctive markings. We will experiment with full strength Indigo and an Indigo wash to give the palest of blues. Experiment with Bio Indigo, an Eco Indigo Vat and 60% Indigo Grains. Shades of blue can be built up with numerous dips to build and layer shades of blue. Colour will also be introduced into your fabrics by under dyeing with pomegranate, onion skins, gardenia and avocado seeds.
Time will be spent on design planning and you will be encouraged to combine and layer techniques to produce more complex patterns and to experiment with shibori techniques on smaller pieces of fabric and paper. You will then have the opportunity to work on Individual projects on larger pieces of fabric and paper.
This is an intermediate level workshop where we will be learning more complex shibori techniques so prior knowledge of basic techniques would be useful.
Material Fee: approx. $60
