Using wire as a structural material, in this workshop we will explore age-old textile techniques adapted to creative wirework. Think twining, lacework, looping, knitting, crocheting and weaving, learn to manipulate wire, get it to behave, and create innovative basketry forms, freeform sculptures, and wall pieces.
The focus will be on design aspects such as line, tone, texture, volume, infill and space, and transposing 2D images and 3D forms into unique wire creations. Inspiration can come from a variety of sources: a simple drawing, photographic image, sketchbook, nature and more.
You will gain many tips and tricks for working with wire. Achieve good twists and tight bends, avoid unwanted kinks, make simple jigs, and select the right tools. Bringing together the materials, techniques, your ideas and designs, everyone is encouraged to explore the possibilities of incorporating wire into their own work, be this mixed media, jewellery, artist books, sculpture, stitch, installation art, or basketry. Whatever your interest or skill, try it in wire to explore possibilities you have never thought of! Suitable for all levels of experience.
Material Fee: approx. $65

Bio
Tania Spencer is a Western Australian artist based in the wheatbelt town of Lake Grace. Her art process combines traditional textile techniques with rural, industrial, or recycled materials. Her works often take the form of large scale knitted installations using fencing wires or wire drawings, and embroideries of heavy wire onto metal supports. Hand bending each wire stitch to create archival textiles; her tools are found in the farming shed, not the sewing box. The transparency of Tania’s works’ structures alludes to societal issues where boundaries are often in a state of flux, like belief systems, social conditioning, cultural differences, and ecological balance. Tania has had 7 solo exhibitions, shown in numerous Sculpture by the Sea events and many national exhibitions, including Love Lace and the Tamworth Textile Triennial. She is a multi-award-winning artist whose works are held in Council collections. She is regularly commissioned to create public and ephemeral artworks.
